AMPWave
AMP has today announced a new piece of functionality for their Banking customers, enabling NFC tap & pay payments on their Android phones.

Called AMPWave, the technology uses Host Card Emulation (HCE) to enable the tap & pay function via NFC. HCE requires Android 4.4 to run, but AMP appears to be offering the update to all customers with phones running this version of the OS and above. AMPWave allows customers to register their AMP Visa Debit card in the app for tap & pay, but no mention has been made at this stage about credit accounts.

AMPWave replaces AMP’s previous solution PayTag, which mirrored the Commonwealth Banks solution of using NFC enabled stickers.

Michael Weeding, AMP Director Digital spoke about the new technology, saying it was a ‘step forward in the way people undertake their everyday transactions’:

The need for simple and secure payment methods on the go is increasing. The HCE technology means people can turn their phone into a mobile wallet, without the need to carry cash or cards. This technology takes cardless payments a step further and ultimately makes banking simpler for customers, underpinning AMP’s strategy to become a more customer driven organisation. It’s important for us to be able to use technology to create a better way of banking for our customers.

It’s simple to activate the functions for AMP customers, with AMP providing a simple three step process:

  1. Register and verify your AMP Visa Debit Card in the AMP App /li>
  2. Before making a payment, activate NFC on your mobile and ensure PayWave is enabled within the App/li>
  3. For purchases up to $100, tap the phone against the contactless payment terminal

For AMP customers, the update is now available in the app on Google Play, for new customers you can contact AMP on 13 30 30 from 8am – 8pm Monday to Friday or from 9am – 5pm on Saturday and Sunday 9am – 5pm.
