Sony SmartWatch 3 owners have been patiently waiting for the Android Wear 5.1 update to land, but we can confirm that the wait is now over. The Android 5.1.1 update is now rolling for the SW3, but if you want to manually upgrade without waiting, we have the OTA URL below.
This new update brings the much anticipated Wi-Fi support that means the watch will be able to receive notifications even when out of bluetooth range of your phone. Android Wear 5.1.1 also includes ‘always-on’ apps (apps stay visible as long as you need them), easy to draw emoji and changes to the launcher so that contacts/apps are only a swipe away. The update brings a new visual appearance which is significantly improved over the previous version.
More details on the new features and how to flash the OTA file can be found here.

OTA downloading now on my SW3
I got the update this afternoon on my Samsung Gear Live 🙂
Nope. No updates here 🙁
Hi Sujay, the phone isn’t involved in applying the OTA to the SW3; you tether the watch to your computer via microUSB and apply the update directly.
Hi Chris, my apologies. I wanted to say watch. But you have answered the question in any case. Just not too sure if I have the courage to do a manual update. Might wait for another day or so before deciding. Thank you for the article.
Hi Chris. Thanks for the information. Finally received my 5.1.1 update. And it is brilliant. Although I think the battery life has gone down a little bit. Used to get 4 days, now I have to recharge after 3. Small price to pay, I guess.
