When Google launched the Material Design language for Android last year, they had a number of examples of what they thought it should look like in real world examples. In 2015, we have a slew of Material Design apps to choose from, and they look brilliant. On the second day of Google IO 2015, Google moved to celebrate excellence in the field of design, announcing the Material Design Showcase, and Material Design Awards.
We’ll jump to the awards part of this announcement first, because one of our favourite Australian developers has taken out one of the awards! That’s right: Shifty Jelly — makers of such fine apps as Pocket Weather and Pocket Casts — won a special award in the category of Seamless Browsing for Pocket Casts, their popular podcast app. The guys couldn’t have been more proud, and us of them. It’s a fantastic achievement.
The other award winners were:
- B&H Photo Video Audio Pro for Immersive Imagery
- New York Times for Elegant Typography
- Pocket for Adaptive Layouts
- Tumblr for Delightful Animation
- Weather Timeline for Crafted Simplicity
The Material Design Showcase is a greater list of applications which demonstrate the best practices and designs using material. There’s 17 applications in the collection and if you’re a fan of stunning user interface design, these apps set the standard. You can browse the full list here.
well deserved for a brilliant app! Its inspiring to see Australian developers doing so well.
