Huawei has also joined the press days here at IFA, announcing their latest high-end phone, the Huawei Mate S, a flagship level phone with high-end specs and a few new tricks up its proverbial software sleeve.

The hardware speaks for itself, with an in-house Kirin 935 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 13MP camera on the rear which uses similar technology to the P8. The camera uses an RGBW Camera sensor with Optical Image Stabilisation and Independent Signal Processing, which Huawei promises will deliver DSLR like photos. The front facing camera is an 8MP sensor, though Huawei has also included a few helpful touches for the all important selfie introducing ‘Soft lighting, with the latest Beauty algorithm’ to make low-light shots pop.

Specification:

  • 5.5-inch AMOLED ONCELL display, 1920 x 1080
  • Hisilicon Kirin 935, Octa Core: Quad 2.2GHz + Quad 1.5GHz
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB On-board Storage with MicroSD Card
  • 13MP Rear Camera with AF, BSI, F2.0, OIS, Dual color-temp LED flashes
  • 8MP Front Facing Camera with FF, BSI, F2.4, LED soft light
  • Accelerometer, Compass, Gyroscope, ALS, Proximate, HALL
  • PS/ Beidou/ GLONASS/AGPS
  • 2700mAh (Typ.) 2620mAh (min.) Lithium Polymer Battery
  • 149.8 x 75.3 x 7.2mm @ 156grams
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, EMUI 3.1

The software is revamped as well, with the same EMUI overlay we saw on the Huawei P8 recently, though this time based on Android 5.1.1. There’s a few new features added here, with Huawei introducing updates to their Knuckle Sense technology and Fingerprint Sense.

Knuckle Sense 2.0 lets you use your knuckle to capture the screen, though this time around you can crop in any shape – hearts, circles, whatever. The Knuckle Sense also allows you to perform captures on multi-page images or webpages capturing a lot of pages of information into a single screenshot. You can also start and stop recording with a two-knuckle double knock on the screen.

Huawei introduced the first single touch fingerprint sensor on the Mate 7 last year and with the Mate S have stepped it up a level with Fingerprint Sense 2.0. It’s increased in recognition speed and sensitivity by 100% making it lightning fast. There’s also functional changes with the fingerprint senesor, it can now swipe through galleries on your phone or scroll up and down through notifications – and if you want to take a selfie, you can tap on it with the phone camera in front-facing mode to take a pic.

The big game changer which caused a collective intake in the audience at the live event is the introduction of Force Touch. This new and innovative feature detects how hard you’re pressing on the screen and allows you to zoom on photos simply by pressing harder, or as they showed off on stage, place an object (an orange in this case) on the screen and weigh it – it’s the little things that make us smile.

The Huawei Mate S will be available in Mystic Champagne, Titanium Grey and other colours – including Pink as seen above – when it goes up for pre-order through their Vmall online store on September 15. At this stage nothing has been announced with regards to local availability here in Australia, but we are very keen to try out the Force Touch feature.

Nice specs, although I don’t know that I’d describe it as “high-end”. I bet the price is high-end. 😉

This phone seems very similar to the newly announced Huawei G8. It seems as though build quality is the main difference.

I think OEMs should focus more on providing greater variety in their handsets. There’s no point in releasing multiple mid-range handsets with few distinguishing features. Sony is very clever with its premium Z5 handsets, while still offering mid-range options such as the M4 Aqua.

Features sound good, Lets hope they don’t screw Australia with a long delay or only certain frequencies limiting the carriers we can use it on. Also why are they doing the whole iPhone-esque look especially on the back with the same lines at the top and bottom…surely the motorolas and acers etc have proven you can have a good looking phone without following apple.
