The Google event where we’ll likely get our first look at the Pixel and Pixel smartphones is less than a week away, but we’re thirsty of as much info as we can get. Earlier this month well known HTC aficionado @llabtoofer advised that the Pixel & Pixel XL would use the Sony IMX378 camera sensor, now it looks like the Xiaomi Mi5S will have that sensor with Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun teasing camera samples from the phone for the past few days.

The technical details on the camera sensor show that the Sony IMX378 captures 12MP shots on a 1/2.3 inch sensor with large 1.55-micron pixels designed for low-light photography. The samples provided via GizmoChina are in 12MP (4000×3000) and 8MP (3264 x 2448) resolution – you can check the EXIF data on the pics. Bear in mind that they are shot on a Xiaomi Mi5S not a Pixel, so take this with a grain of salt as software and processing etc. will be different on each phone, but it’s a good opportunity to get a look at the potential of the sensor:

I think if the new Pixel is too expensive I’d be giving serious consideration to a Mi5s.

These have to have been touched up after the photo was taken. There’s no way the phone busts out photos like that without any post-processing.

Great photos taken by a great photographer. More important than the camera these days without question.

That said, the potential looks good.
