During their live-stream from New York, Google has finally confirmed that Android 8.0 is called Oreo. The announcement video, titled ‘Open Wonder’ shows an eclipse themed Oreo super hero.
According to Google the code for Android 8.0 is being pushed to the Android Open Source Project today, with final builds of Oreo for the Nexus 5X/6P and the Pixel currently in testing with carriers now before an expected rollout ‘soon’. The updates for the Pixel C and Nexus Player will also be coming along at the same time.
Google has launched the Android 8.0 website at android.com/oreo where it lists all the new features of Android 8.0.

- Background limits: Android Oreo helps minimize background activity in the apps you use least, it’s the super power you can’t even see.
- Autofill: With your permission, Autofill remembers your logins to get you into your favorite apps at supersonic speed.

- Notification Dots: Press the notification dots to quickly see what’s new, and easily clear them by swiping away.
- Android Instant Apps: Teleport directly into new apps right from your browser, no installation needed.
….and more with Google Play Protect to keep you safer, downloadable fonts, and of course Android 8.0 is built on Project Treble, a modular architecture that makes it easier and faster for hardware makers to deliver Android updates.
Another ‘feature’ highlighted is the new Android Emoji which will see the death of the Blob emoji :(. There are 60 new emoji included in the Android 8.0 update, but we’re really going to miss those blobby guys.
As to when other manufacturers devices will receive their Oreo update, Google has said they are working closely with ‘Essential, General Mobile, HMD Global Home of Nokia Phones, Huawei, HTC, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp and Sony’ who are ‘scheduled to launch or upgrade devices to Android 8.0 Oreo’
If you’re enrolled in the Android O beta program you will receive an OTA update to the final build of Android 8.0 when it’s ready to go.

I’ve only had my nexus 6p shy of 12 months. I have had an ongoing issue where it sounds like I am under water when talking on the phone. Most people complain to me about it when in a call with them. I’ve been reading google support forums and have discovered it’s a really wide spread issue. Android 8 hasn’t fixed it either 🙁 I am just inside 12 month warranty with Kogan. Going to attempt a refund or replacement phone of some kind. Can anyone recommend anything? The oneplus 5 looks okay?

So glad i paid the big bucks for a pixel… Now my phone will boot faster….yay…. Lol what a waste
