Using Google Assistant to get your directions is pretty straight forward, but it kind of assumes you’ve got a car. What if you’re on foot, taking the train, or riding a bike? Well, Google is bringing precisely that kind of functionality to Assistant, mirroring what’s been available in Google Maps for what feels like forever.
As you can see above, the new “Getting around” menu option is now present in Google Assistant, and you can tell Assistant how to .. well .. get you around. The choices include walking, public transit, biking, and driving. You can specify different settings for your commute and general directions. After setting that, you can ask for directions via Assistant and it will provide your preferred type.
The change is server side, so it might not be available in your Assistant just yet. That said, it is visible on our office Pixel 2, so you probably should have it soon enough.
