After launching as an exclusive app for Optus post-paid customers in July last year, Optus has today opened up access to the National Geographic app to all Australian mobile users.

The app is available on both Android and iOS, offering both video and story content from the National Geographic archives to users. Optus customers have viewed over 68,000 hours of video content in the app since launching, and now it’s available to everyone.

Optus Managing Director of Marketing and Product, Ben White, said

Lots of people have told us over the past few months they would like to access the app and we are excited to now share it on a trial basis for any customer, on any network, as long as they have an active mobile service.

The app is free to download, with a 30-day trial to access the vast array of content including local and international articles published online from January 2014, over 7,000 long and short form videos and over 28,000 photos and galleries from National Geographic’s award winning photographers but has a $14.99 per month in-app subscription to maintain access to that content.

Update: It’s important to note that with a lot of video and high-resolution imagery in the app, that it will be data intensive. Optus users will see the data from the app zero-rated, but users on other networks will have to take that into account when using the app.

The app is available on the Google Play store to check out now, or you can jump to the National Geographic landing page to find out more.
