Messenger Lite, Facebook’s lightweight version of their popular chat app is getting a new feature today with the company announcing video chat is being added.

Facebook launched Messenger Lite in 2016 as a way to expand the reach of their chat app to emerging markets. The stripped down version of Messenger doesn’t (at this stage) include ads but still let you send and receive messages, photos, links and stickers but not video chat, that changes today.

Facebook has seen a massive surge in popularity for video chat in the past year, with 17 billion video chats being initiated in Messenger during 2017, more than twice the number initiated in 2016. The attraction for people to chat face to face is there and they want to bring that to everyone, hence the addition to Messenger Lite.

Once you’ve gotten the latest version of Messenger Lite it’s easy to initiate a video chat, simply open an existing conversation with a contact and then tap the video icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Facebook says you can also upgrade audio calls to video while in a call by tapping the video icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Facebook says that Video Chat will be included in the latest version of Messenger Lite which will begin rolling out from today.
