While Chromecast works like a charm for online video and audio streaming, at least for the most part, streaming local content has always been an issue. Google is looking to fix that with local cast support now available in the Chrome Beta channel.

Support for ‘casting’ a local video or audio file is now available if you’re on the Chrome beta channel after you enable the enable-features=EnableCastLocalMedia flag.

Once the flag is enabled the ‘Cast File’ option will show up in the ‘Cast’ option in the browser menu as seen above.

There’s no information at this stage on which file types are supported, nor what multimedia codecs are supported but if you’re on the Chrome beta channel you can enable the flag and find out.
