It seems that Google Maps is now displaying some additional prompts for users uploading photographs of food at cafes, asking them to name and rate the dish.
Given Google’s mission to catalog and organise the world’s data, this isn’t surprising – Google can use this additional information to take its recommendations a step further by telling you not just which cafes are popular but also which specific food at a particular cafe is popular.
When you add a new photo, Maps will ask you to name the dish and present you with a fairly comprehensive list of meals as autocomplete options. In the three attempts I made at this, it didn’t recognise “pork dim sum” but did recognise “porridge” and even “deep fried ice cream”.
After you’ve named the dish, Maps will also ask you to recommend it with a simple thumb up/down rating.
