After announcing support for the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus smartwatches earlier this month, music streaming service Spotify has today announced a dedicated Wear OS app is starting to rollout.
According to Spotify the app will be available in the Google Play Store for your phone, and if you’re on Wear OS 2.0 and above on your wrist from today with full support rolling out over the next week.
The app is fully functional supporting the ability to play, pause, or skip to the next track directly from your wrist, as well as skip backwards 15 seconds in Podcasts or music if you need to. You can even tap the ♡ icon on your watch screen to save it to your collection – essentially this saves it to your Spotify Music Library to find easily next time.
The app will also allow you to use Spotify Connect – their version of ‘casting’ – to stream music to compatible speakers around your home directly from your wrist.
Mikael Ericsson, Senior Product Director at Spotify said
We’re excited to bring improved on-the-go-access to your favorite music and podcasts to millions of Spotify users on Wear OS by Google smartwatches. Being able to easily access, control, and connect music directly from your wrist opens up a world of new opportunities. We look forward to continuing to improve the Spotify experience in this space.
There is a fairly major feature which Spotify hasn’t mentioned in their release, which is the ability to save and playback music offline. It’s an important feature for many users, but we’ll have to wait and see if it’s present once the app arrives.
As well as the announcement of the Wear OS app, Spotify has announced a new partnership with the Fossil Group which will see the standalone Spotify app for Wear OS auto-installed on all Fossil Gen 4 Smartwatches and Michael Kors Access Runway Smartwatches from November.
The app will be available in the next week, so keep checking the Google Play Store from your wrist to make sure you get it when it arrives.
