Did you know that Sony likes to launch phones at Mobile World Congress? You should – its been happening for a while, and we’re usually at the event to cover them. Unsurprisingly, this year looks to be no different with the company’s rumoured-but-of-course-it-will-be-real flagship phone set to launch at this year’s show being the Xperia XZ4.
Sony’s upcoming phone (/phone range) has already been the subject of a few leaks. We’ve seen rumours of a Compact model (yes please) and a triple camera system, but little by way of specs. Strap yourself in, because that’s where we’re headed today thanks to GSMArena.
Let’s get to the boring bits first. There’ll be a Snapdragon 855 processor, and 6GB of RAM. That’s kind of par for the course for an Android flagship in 2019. There’s also said to be a 4,400 mAh battery on board, which should provide plenty of juice for the last, most interesting part.
Sony’s going cinematic on the XZ4’s display. It’s said to be a whopping 6.5 inches, OLED technology and set at an unsual 21:9 aspect ratio giving it a resolution of 3360 x 1440px.
Many films and TV shows are moving to this super-widescreen aspect ratio (notably, even Doctor Who’s most recent season), and so it’s no surprise Sony – with its interests in film production – would want a device out there that shows new films (especially their own) at their best, without any letterboxing effects.
GSMArena is quiet on the subject of notches, though. Maybe we’ll see Sony continue to eschew the notch generation and provide a normal, flat edged screen? We can only hope.
This rumour also doesn’t really address the purported Compact variant of the phone. Traditionally, Sony’s Compact variants have been just as super-powered as their more standard-sized models, but with some differences on screen resolution. We’ll have to wait and see what happens on that front.
Sony will – probably – launch the Xperia XZ4 during its MWC press conference in late February. Ausdroid will be there on the ground with the full story as it (probably) happens.
