Alphabet’s Wing drone delivery service has been in testing in Canberra for some time now, with the team behind the aerial delivery service read to make the next big step and start a wider commercial delivery service. After kitting out a purpose-built delivery warehouse, Wing has been waiting for regulatory approval.

Following approval from the Australia air safety regulator the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), Wing will shortly commence delivery to 5 new suburbs of Canberra. At launch, only 100 homes in the new suburbs of Crace, Franklin, and Palmerston will be eligible with Wing adding additional households in Harrison and Gungahlin after that.

To address resident complaints from previous trials, Wing has developed a new quieter drone that is slightly slower but less noisy. So what can you get delivered? At launch there are 12 partners including Kickstart Expresso, Capital Chemist, Pure Gelato, Jasper + Myrtle, Bakers Delight, Guzman Y Gomez, and Drummond Golf.

Personally, I’d love a Cappuccino, some tacos and perhaps a little Gelato dropped off at my door. While a full-scale drone delivery service is a long way off, receiving official CASA approval to operate in these slightly more built-up areas is an important next step in getting me my aerial caffeine fix.

If you live in Canberra why not drop by Wing’s Australian website and just register, you never know whos going to be next!
