Google announce Stadia games, pricing and subscription details: up to US$9.99 per month

When Google announced their cloud gaming platform earlier this year there were a lot of details left unknown. Overnight and prior to E3 Google have announced the details that were missing from the original reveal.

Google Stadia will be launching in November for US$9.99 a month which will give you gaming at 4K 60fps HDR picture quality with 5.1 surround sound. This level of subscription Google have called Stadia Pro and there will be a free Stadia Base coming next year which will offer up to 1080p streaming of games you purchase — the Base frame rate is still 60fps but the sound is just ‘stereo’.

Stadia Pro will give give free games regularly, beginning with Destiny 2: The Collection along with the ability to buy other games when you want to and some Stadia discounts on in-game purchases. Stadia Base will NOT give any free games at any time nor discounts but you can still buy games whenever you want to.

The platform will launch with a Stadia Founder’s Edition for US$129 which includes a Chromecast Ultra, a limited edition Night Blue Stadia Controller, three months of Stadia Pro, a three month Buddy pass to invite a friend along for the ride, and dibs on selecting a Stadia name. The Founder’s Edition can be pre-ordered now from any of the participating countries.

Additional controllers, or stand alone controllers can be purchased from US$69 which includes a USB-C port for charging, wired gameplay and accessories, Dual-band (2.4GHz / 5GHz) Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac connectivity and Bluetooth LE 4.2.

Stadia can be played on virtually anything that can access the Chrome browser including desktops, laptops, tablets and Pixel 3 devices (for phones it is exclusive to the Pixel 3 at launch). A Chromecast dongle will also allow you to access Stadia. To play though all you need is a device with Google Chrome or a Chromecast Ultra along with a Stadia controller — or any controller that can be connected to your device including a mouse and/or a keyboard.

Decent internet speeds will also be required for Stadia gaming with a minimum of 10mbps download and 1mbps upload required for 720p gaming with surround sound — rules out anyone at my work using Telstra. 35Mbps is required for the full 4K 60fps in HDR with 5.1 surround sound experience — yes, finally a 5G use-case.

Google Stadia will be launching on November 14 in the US, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and UK with more countries to follow next year — when the free Stadia Base launches.

Hopefully Australia is included in the next round of release countries and given our amazing NBN that our government have spared no expense building I am sure everyone will have amazing access to it.
