Just in case your Ingress isn’t feeling very Prime, byour Pokemon Go got up and went or your Wizards aren’t very United, Netflix and Next Games have unveiled a new game based on Stranger Things.
Stranger Things will be a location-based puzzle game, and reimagines the property with a cartoon-themed look and feel.
Besides neatly sidestepping the issue of licensing actors’ likenesses, this might also make some of Stranger Things’ creepy-scary creatures a little more palatable for a mainstream gaming audience.
Players will be able to explore the Upside Down hidden around them in their daily travels, and team up to fight back its emerging evils.
Netflix is definitely looking to establish Stranger Things as a franchise, with related merchandise finally starting to emerge (particularly LEGO’s imaginative Upside Down set).
Next Games has an impressive pedigree in the location/AR-based game space with The Walking Dead: Our World capturing gamers’ imaginations (I know a few Ingress players who’ve switched over to it).
It all sounds pretty exciting and fun enough, but you’ll have to wait a little while – Stranger Things is due for release in 2020. In the meantime, the third season of the show is due to hit Netflix in early July.
