eSIM isn’t exactly new technology – it’s been around for a while now – but until more recently, it hasn’t really been embraced in Australia. We first saw eSIM in Australia with earlier iPads, and then Apple Watches and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch as well.
There have been mobiles that incorporate eSIM for a while now, including some of the recent Pixel devices, but we haven’t seen carriers in Australia actually supporting them. Until now.
Starting this week, Telstra will bring eSIM functionality to the new iPhone lineup, marking the first time that Telstra customers will be able to sign up to use eSIM for their primary mobile devices. Better yet, for those phones which have a single physical SIM slot, the eSIM can be used to give dual-SIM functionality, an added bonus for many customers.
The first devices to be supported will be the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Existing devices already on sale – which will be supported from Friday too – include the iPhone XR, XS and XS max.
At the time of writing, there’s no Android eSIM devices supported, but Telstra advises that this will be reviewed as new eSIM Android devices come to market, and some existing Android eSIM devices may become supported later too.

The Android instructions on the Telstra eSIM site are exactly what to do in Android 10. So there’s a very high likelihood that they’ll support the Pixel 4.
Looking forward to scrapping my work phone and just having the one device!
