Google’s been getting busy with 16 new device types showing up in the list of Google Assistant compatible devices over the past day or so. It seems the team has mostly been on a kitchen accessory mission but there are a few unexpected bits of bedroom furniture that tagged along for the update.

- Stand Mixer
- Yogurt maker
Let’s deal with the stand out oddities first: Beds, Closets and Drawer. Now if you’re rich, first please back us on Patreon, and secondly, you’d already know that you can get motorised beds, cupboards and drawers. For the rest of us, we know know that not only do we have to open our own drawers, we also know we can’t have Google do it for us.
Everything else on the list is expected, or at least not surprising. Google is now quickly adding device-specific schemas for basically everything in your home. This means that it’s easier for OEMs to integrate their products into Google Assistant it also means that the consumer will be a more consistent experience.
Imagine if you will that you have three different brands of electronically opening drawers. Not only do these integrations mean that you can just ask Google to open them without first calling on the brand action, but it also means all 3 brands will react to the same words in the same way.
With IoT continuing to grow it’s good to see Google providing a little leadership and direction for OEMs on how to integrate device, and how they will be controlled. Is there anything on that list that excites you?
