Australia’s Seven Network today announced it plans to partner with Optus to create a 4K Ultra HD channel featuring Seven’s coverage of Tokyo 2020 which will be available exclusively to Optus 5G Home customers via the Fetch Mighty PVR.
Seven West Media Chief Revenue Officer, Kurt Burnette, said:
“This will be the most-watched Olympics and the biggest digital event in Australian streaming history.”
“Seven’s coverage of the Olympics will be unprecedented, and with time zones differing by only one-hour, Tokyo 2020 will feel like a home Games for Australians”.
Optus has over 300 5G sites currently in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and other key locations in NSW, Victoria and Queensland, with 1200 sites planned by March 2020.
Optus VP Product Development, TV and Content, Clive Dickens, said:
“This exclusive partnership is another element of our 5G ‘Video Experience Network’ which will allow us to ensure end-to-end delivery of 4K Ultra HD Video content to exclusive Optus customers”.
To access the 4K Ultra HD channel of Seven’s coverage of Tokyo 2020, Optus customers will be required to have a Fetch Mighty, with an active Fetch subscription, a 4K-ready television and Optus 5G home broadband plan.
As a result, this likely means that the 4K Ultra HD channel will be accessible to very, very few customers.
Fetch CEO, Scott Lorson, said:
“As a result of this partnership, Optus subscribers with a Fetch Mighty will be in for a special treat, with access for the first time ever to a 4K Ultra HD channel streaming Seven’s coverage of the Olympics. We are delighted to work with Optus and Seven on this ground-breaking initiative.”

Disgusting, so the rest of us who pay top dollar for 4K capable NBN from Optus and our Optus Fetch STB, won’t be in the loop, just the half dozen people who have 5G phones.

It does seem a bit unfair for Optus to stop customers like you enjoying this 4K Olympics coverage channel
I guess they’re trying to switch some customers over from the NBN (which Optus has to pay wholesale fees to every month) to their own 5G Home broadband network (which they can make more profit from)
realistically though I wonder how many people will actually get a solid reliable fast 5G Optus signal in their house to be able to use for home broadband
the initial launch 5G frequency used by Optus and Telstra doesn’t go through walls well!
Thanks mate. I mean sure they can try to encourage people to fork out dollars to upgrade to 5G phones etc. But for those of us who have recently upgraded 4G phones through them, it’s a slap in the face. There’s only so much $’s people can on-going keep spilling out of their wallets.
