Google has overnight, quietly launched here and around the globe, the new cheaper version of the Chromecast with Google TV.

The new and cheaper Chromecast with Google TV has the same form factor as the current 4K version and still comes with a remote, so there is no need to keep your smartphone nearby to control the device, although you can still use your smartphone via the Google TV app to control the device if you have lost the remote.

The new Chromecast with Google TV is limited at 1080p HDR viewing, which is ok if your tv doesn’t support 4K resolution. The new Chromecast with Google TV will still support streaming app services such as Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Prime Video, YouTube and others.

The new devices also apparently support Google’s Stadia games and you can still cast compatible Android and iOS apps or mirror your Chrome browser tabs.

There is still a Google Assistant button on the remote to control programming, ask questions or control smart home connected devices and you can still group the devices with Nest speakers for multi-room playback around the home via music apps like Spotify, Pandora and YouTube Music.

The new Chromecast with Google TV can be purchased in Snow (white), Sunrise (yellowish) and Sky (blue) colours for $59 from the Google store right now.
