It was not a very well-kept secret that Google would announce a new version of the Chromecast at todays MadebyGoogle event in San Francisco. A week ago we posted some renders and pricing of a Chromecast that was supposed to support 4K TV. As expected Google announced the Chromecast Ultra today.
Joining the 30 million Chromecast devices already in operation, the Chromecast Ultra is a next generation Chromecast device that is audio feedback positive. It offers a premium streaming experience with streaming of up to 4K UltraHD with HDR and Dolby Vision support. The new Chromecast Ultra will offer improved performance and reliability with it being up to 1.8 times faster at loading content. The data stream load will be quite high with 4K as you could imagine and to combat this Google have integrated an ethernet port into the power pack while still maintaining a small compact size.
With 4K content arriving on Google Play movies in November it makes this Chromecast device an attractive purchase. It will be available here “later this year” for $99AUD. To keep yourself apprised of any Chromecast Ultra developments you can join the waiting list at the Chromecast Ultra page on Google Play. The Chromecast Ultra will also be available from JB Hifi and Harvey Norman for $99.
Netflix and google now both offering 4k content, yet who will have the network capacity to deliver it to mainstream (25Mbps recommended by netflix)?
Cracks in the NBN strategy starting to appear already – who’d have thought?
Certainly interested. And curious to see what 4k content on Google Play Movies is like when it launches. Will that even launch in Australia?
Kind of amused they felt the need to include ethernet (fast ethernet I assume?).
