Chromecast
It’s been three years since Google’s breakfast with Sundar event which saw the original Chromecast unveiled, as well as the 2013 Nexus 7. While the 2nd gen Nexus 7 hasn’t been updated (yet), the Chromecast was such a runaway success it was updated in September this year, but it was that original odd shaped dongle which started it all and it’s cake time.

There were definitely issues with the original Chromecast – it didn’t have Wi-Fi 802.11AC – but it was exactly what the short-lived and ultimately canned Nexus Q should have been. It was cheap, but it did the job letting you view video, webpages, even play games or stream music to a TV, or essentially any device with a HDMI port.

Google took their sweet time launching the $35USD dongle here in Australia, with the Australian launch coming 10 months later in May 2014, luckily we didn’t have to wait that long for gen 2.

Here’s what Google tweeted today (that link will take you to the Google Store to buy a gen 2 Chromecast):

We love the Chromecast, and it’s successor(s) so it’s a big happy birthday from all of us here.

How are you using your Chromecast? Have you updated to a gen 2? What’s your favourite app to use with Chromecast?

    Great little devices. Thanks Ausdroid for pointing out that one day on Amazon when they accidentally were shipping to Australia 🙂

    Yep, took advantage on that day too!

    I’ve got two Chromecasts at home (one for each tv) and couldn’t live
    without them. Makes it so easy to stream content (especially Netflix and
    iView). Just wish that ABC would fix the buffering issue that has
    affected their app for nearly two years >:(

    iView, OMG …

    Ad->Warning->TV show?…no…cut out or stuff up.

    Ad->Warning->TV show…yay..worked this time.

    agree iview is useless with the chromecast and its all on the ABC side imo
