In these early days of Google Home there’s a few bugs still being ironed out. This, for those who haven’t imported one yet, means when it’s officially on-sale here a smoother launch with more features and connections available. One of those connections is to Google Cast enabled Sony speakers and embedded Android TVs which Sony says will be compatible soon thanks to a new firmware update they’ve released.
The update, which is believed to be separate from the expected Marshmallow update that was due before the end of year, and is for all their embedded Android TV sets and “Chromecast built-in” speakers, sound bars and more. The update will start pushing out today, however in true Sony style it’s still not available for most users (it’s still not available for mine).
When the update reaches your TV you’ll be able to use services such as the new Netflix service compatibility to command Google Home to play video on your TV using commands like “OK Google, play Making a Murderer from Netflix on the TV”. Commands such as “Ok Google, turn it up/down, play, stop, skip” will also work.
The update also allows for multi-room audio setups and grouping speakers which can then have music pushed to them from Google Home “Ok Google, play some workout music on my Sony speaker”.
When the update will arrive isn’t really clear, but it’s apparently started rolling out so time to start checking.
Very much looking forward to this update. Come on Sony, just get it out already.
