Verily, the part of Alphabet Inc concerned with health and life sciences, has announced its stylish health tracking smartwatch with a unique hook — a claimed 7-day battery life. However, before you get too excited at this week-long battery life with always on display, this watch is probably not for consumers. In fact, it may never actually be available “for sale”. From what we understand, this watch is intended as a data gathering tool for conducting research.
Verily claim the watch is “tailored specifically for high quality signals and seamless usage, with consideration of the needs of observational studies, such as how continuous wear impacts a user’s experience”. Apparently, the device was designed in concert with researchers and clinicians and of course “users”.
The Study watch is equipped with an array of sensors to collect data including electrocardiogram (ECG), heart rate, electrodermal activity, and inertial movements. All of the data is encrypted on the device and can be synced weekly thanks to the increased storage on the device.
Currently, the Study Watch is planned for use in two studies, the Personalized Parkinson’s Project and the Baseline study aimed at exploring the transition between health and disease. Verily is planning to use the device with other partners in future studies.
