It’s been a long time coming, but Australian movie streaming company Quickflix has today released an updated app which is said to be compatible with most Android devices with Chromecast support included.
The new app supports both phones and tablets with a (mostly) native Android UI and lets you browse Movies or TV Shows and handle playlist management. You can watch videos on your device or cast them to the big screen.
Catalog
Quickflix’s movies catalog can be a little bit hit-and-miss – you’ll find recent-ish movies like Saving Mr Banks, Thor: The Dark World, The Hobbit, 47 Ronin, Ender’s Game and Frozen. Beyond new releases, other “just added” movies like Batman Begins and a somewhat cheeky promotion for the 90’s Godzila movie taking advantage of interest in the recent remake.
The TV shows offered are probably a little more up to date with titles like The Walking Dead, Revenge and Da Vinci’s Demons alongside some classics like Red Dwarf and Little Britain. There’s also a well-stocked selection from HBO’s catalogue like Game of Thrones, True Detective and Louie.
Quickflix also has a Stand-up comedy selection which also dips into HBO’s catalog (Dennis Miller and Dave Chapelle are on offer) and highlights local acts like Jimeoin, Kitty Flanagan and The Umbilical Brothers.
Subscriptions
Quickflix offers monthly and weekly subscription plans – DVD/Blu-ray by mail for $12.99, Streaming only for $9.99, and a combination of the two for $19.99. Subscribers can cancel at any time with no minimum contract length or cancellation fee.
There’s a 14-day free trial if you’d like to take it out for a spin and try before you buy.
There are weekly subscriptions advertised, but the circumstances in which they’re available aren’t clear. I was only able to sign up for a month of streaming from my inactive account. Your mileage may vary.
Go Premium
One caveat you might need to consider is that Quickflix also has a tier of “Premium Content” for both movies and TV shows, and it charges on a per-movie or per-episode basis for them regardless of whether or not you’re a streaming subscriber. This often includes new-release movies which are $5.99 for a 48-hour rental period.
Premium TV shows are a little different, costing $2.99 an episode or a varying price for a full season (usually with a bit of a discount over buying each episode individually).
You can buy premium content regardless of whether you’re a streaming subscriber or not, so you won’t be locked in to paying Quickflix every month for these items should you buy them.
Value Proposition
The value you get from a subscription vs ad-hoc purchases very much depends what you’re looking for. On the one hand, you can stream every episode of The Wire, The Sopranos or Sex and the City, but if you’re looking for Game of Thrones you’ll find it cheaper on Google Play.
As with most things, you’d be well advised to do your homework on pricing before committing to buy.
Quickflix’s iOS app has also been updated today to include Chromecast, and the company has released a Chrome extension for Chromecast playback from within your browser.
After Presto‘s launch yesterday, it’s good to see another streaming video company enter the fray with wider Android compatibility and Chromecast support.

Quickflix Goes Live with Streaming of Movies and TV Shows to the new Google Chromecast.
Quickflix, Australia’s leading movie and TV streaming company, today announced it had launched its streaming service to the new Google Chromecast.
Chromecast is a new and easy way to stream TV shows and movies to the TV screen at home. Simply plug Chromecast into the television’s HDMI port, connect it to WiFi, and then cast Quickflix instantly from a smartphone, tablet or laptop to the TV.
Quickflix’s new Google Chromecast-enabled streaming iOS app for iPhones and iPads is available now at iTunes and its universal Android app is available in the Google Play store. An increasing range of popular Android mobiles and tablets will be supported over the coming weeks. Quickflix has also released an extension for the popular Google Chrome internet browser, available in the Chrome web store, allowing laptops and desktops to stream to Google Chromecast-connected TVs.

In the three months to March this year, the number of devices customers registered to stream Quickflix increased by 25 per cent to more than 350,000.
As a special launch promotion until 31 August, Quickflix is rewarding $10 credit to everyone who registers and streams Quickflix via their Chromecast, including existing and new customers. New customers also receive a one month free trial subscription.

At least there app “looks” like it will work on all devices unlike dont give a shit about the customer Foxtel. I would much rather give my money to Quickflx though I suspect both are as foreign owned as each other.
