Hot on the heels of some leaks of new renders this morning, news from a Huawei product briefing shows the company is confident that its new Kirin 980 chipset can run rings around Apple’s A12 Bionic processor.
At a briefing attended by TechRadar, Huawei’s executives spoke about their new Kirin 980 chipset. The quality of the Huawei silicon is fairly well known; for some time now they’ve been able to outpace Qualcomm’s chipsets, but Huawei has set its sights higher now, aiming to best Apple as well.
According to Huawei, the Kirin 980 built on a 7nm process is going to be more powerful than Apple’s A12 Bionic. Apple’s chip, also built on a 7nm process, powered the recently announced iPhone XS and XR range, and while they share the inclusion of some 6.9 billion transistors, Huawei believes that it has the performance edge, and is looking forward to showing off some AI tricks come the Mate 20 launch next month.
As to precisely what those capabilities will be? I guess we’ll have to wait a couple of weeks to find out.
