DXOMark has been ranking selfie cameras, I found out today, and it’s given the Huawei P30 Pro a rating of 89, representing a combined score between 90 for photo performance and 88 for video.

The Huawei P30 Pro front-facing camera is far from the phone’s party piece; it’s a single lens 32MP camera, f/2.0 aperture lens that can shoot up to 1080p @ 30fps video.

Probably the disappointing area of the P30 Pro front-facing camera is that it lacks autofocus, opting for a fixed focus setup instead. This is an area for improvement in a future camera, but noting that Huawei wanted to keep the front of the P30 Pro as minimal as possible, it’s hard to fault their choices here.

In their findings, DXOMark reached the following conclusions about the P30 Pro front camera:

Performance from the front cameras hasn’t been quite as impressive, but the P30 Pro offers significant improvements over the P20 Pro. Exposure across stills and video is excellent, and the P30 Pro boasts some of the best HDR capabilities currently available for selfie shooters. Color is another strength, with pleasant rendering as well as accurate white balance, and bokeh simulation is good, if not perfect.

There are opportunities for improvement—notably the fixed-focus lens and the limited depth of field. Improved detail and texture from the high-resolution 32Mp sensor should be possible as well. When all is said and done, though, the Huawei P30 Pro front camera is very capable and easy to recommend.

All in all, the DXOMark Selfie review of the P30 Pro is a good, if not lengthy read into how front-facing cameras perform, what works well and what doesn’t. If you’re a big selfie fan, it’s worth a read.
