Sony has been moving towards openness with regards to working with the open-source community for the last few years. They started moving towards a more open approach back in 2012 when they added AOSP support for their flagship at the time the Sony Xperia S. Today they’ve announced that they will be adding their kernel source to the Sony Dev GitHub and will be adding more sources for other devices over time.
Sony has already added source for a large range of Sony Xperia devices such as the Xperia Z Ultra, Z1, Z1 Compact, Z2 and more. To get access to the source you simply head over to the SonyXperiaDev GitHub, select your build and you’ll be able to see the commits from the chipset manufacturer kernel that Sony use, as well as any changes that Sony has made.
It’s an interesting move from Sony, and anyone supporting the Open-Source movement should welcome this move. Sony are probably one of the most open companies with regards to development now, so now we’ll need to wait and see how this translates to public perception and sales.
