The announcement of the name of the next version of Android as Nougat of course brought about the question of which version number Android it will be. Thankfully the video released by Google on how they decided on the name answers that. It’s Android 7.0.
Google recently updated the clock time in demo mode on Android N Dev Preview 4 to 7:00, a feature that historically shows the version number of Android. The demo mode shows as below:
Throughout the history of Android releases Google has had a number of minor version number changes with the release of a new version of Android, most recently Android Jelly Bean and KitKat shared version 4.x. From Lollipop however they’ve moved onto a more refined release with a full version number change:
- Cupcake 1.5
- Donut 1.6
- Eclair 2.0–2.1
- Froyo 2.2–2.2.3
- Gingerbread 2.3–2.3.7
- Honeycomb 3.0–3.2.6
- Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0–4.0.4
- Jelly Bean 4.1–4.3.1
- KitKat 4.4–4.4.4
- Lollipop 5.0–5.1.1
- Marshmallow 6.0–6.0.1
The version number doesn’t really matter all that much in the grand scheme of things but it’s interesting to know.
