Google’s new Internet of Things (IoT) platform, imaginatively called Android Things is getting a big mainstream boost today with chip maker Qualcomm announcing support for the platform is coming to their 4G LTE enabled Snapdragon 210 later this year.
The Android Things platform has been using WiFi, as well as Bluetooth in a range of devices such as the Intel Edison, NXP Pico, and Raspberry Pi 3 since Google announced it back in December, but the addition of 4G LTE capability allows for more imaginative implementations.
The X5 modem which can support Cat 4 LTE speeds, means fast access in small devices while on the go to things like the Google Cloud and services. The Snapdragon 210 also supports Google Cast for Audio, so there could be some interesting applications in that for a low-cost processor.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 powers a range of phones currently on the market including HTC Desire, and Lumia phones, so could do a fair bit in the IoT space.
Qualcomm will also extend support for the Android Things OS to their Smart Home Reference Platform.
