Google has today announced a new spatial audio Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers creating Augmented and Virtual Reality, as well as 360-degree video.
The new SDK is based off Google’s VR Audio SDK with Resonance Audio able to be used in AR, VR and 360-degree on both mobile and desktop applications. According to Google, ‘The SDK uses highly optimized digital signal processing algorithms based on higher order Ambisonics to spatialize hundreds of simultaneous 3D sound sources, without compromising audio quality, even on mobile.’
In short, the SDK gives developers a non-resource intensive way to give depth to audio in these applications allowing for a more realistic audio experience in these new applications. Google gives the example of a guitar being played, with audio being louder in front of the guitar player than behind it, with audio getting louder the closer you get to the source, or quieter the further you move away or if the user turns their back on it.
For developers, Resonance Audio is available in IDEs across iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and Linux, as well as being integrated in both Unity and Unreal.
