Filming videos in portrait should be grounds for a number of terrible punishments, but still people persist. So, instead of having a terrible time viewing the videos correctly in YouTube, the app will now display videos ‘correctly’.

Discovered by Android Police in the YouTube APK version 10.28, portrait videos will now display in portrait rather than being forced into a horrible landscape mode which just enhances how terrible they look with black bars either side.

Google has attempted to get users to remember to turn their phones to the side using an on-screen animation in the Google Camera app, but people persist, so they’ve done all they can for the time being.

The YouTube update should be rolling out to phones over the next few days, but as always you can grab the update early if you wish.

Great quality of life change. I believe this was implemented in response to a Reddit post outlining the issue.
