Google is reportedly working on creating an affiliate program for Google Play content, starting with Music and Movies, though could extend further even onto the Google Store for devices.

According to a report from 9to5Google, Google is working with a company called Performance Horizon Group, the same company who supported Apple’s affiliate program, to create possibilities for content creators to monetize their work further by pointing potential customers to their work on Google Play.

Affiliates would be issued an affiliate ID, similar to how a large number of online retailers – including Apple, Amazon and more operate, which gives a part commission to the referrer for pointing to the Play store. It’s not clear as to whether this would only include the content creators, or be extended to anyone referring customers to content on Google Play.

The service hasn’t been announced as yet, and Google is well known for killing a service before it reaches the mainstream. It’s an interesting concept and we await more information.
