In line with their new focus on Chromecast after the launch of the gen 2 hardware, Google’s YouTube Kids app, their app designed to show content suitable for your kids has been updated with Chromecast support.

YouTube Kids is a pretty neat app which lets you control the viewing experience, you can leave a phone or tablet in your kids hands and they can use the keyboard or voice search to get new results, but you are in control with options to limit search or set time limits on how long your kids watch for. But until now, it had been a purely on-device experience, so Chromecast support is very welcome.

The Chromecast support is the headline feature of the update, but there’s other features and content now available to watch in the app, including new shows and playlists.

  • Watch YouTube Kids on the big screen: Want to enjoy your favorite videos as a family? Now you can, using Chromecast, Apple TV, game consoles or a smartTV.
  • Explore new videos with guest-curated playlists: Have a budding scientist or eager explorer on your hands? Find out what videos educators, celebs and other parents recommend with guest-created playlists. Playlists from National Geographic Kids, Kid President, and a girl power-themed playlist from Academy Award®-winning actor Geena Davis are already live—and more are coming soon from YouTube creators including Vsauce and Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls.
  • Enjoy new shows: New videos are produced and uploaded to YouTube Kids every day—including exciting original shows and series from HooplaKidz, TuTiTu, SciShow Kids, DreamWorksTV and more.

For parents it’s also gotten a little better with a new on-boarding experience which will explain the app, how to use it and of course how to set up parental controls. The parental controls also now includes the option to use a personal passcode rather than a spelled out code.

Of course this is all a bit hard to do if you’re outside the US where Google has limited the app. But of course you can get the app other ways and side-load it onto your phone or tablet.

I’m finding this app a must for anyone with young kids. I sideloaded on my Android devices and used a US account to get it on the iPad, but seriously Google, release it internationally ASAP.
