Now On Tap
Android 6.0 is rolling out to Nexus devices today, it may take a while longer to get to other phones, but when it does, Google is quite keen to push the new Now On Tap assistant which Google is hoping will take the hassle out of doing little tasks you have to do every day.

We’ve all been in the situation where you get a suggestion to go for dinner or see a movie at a certain place/time, you then have to search for the venue, find their number so you can call them to make a reservation, and then add the event to your calendar. Now on Tap can even tell when multiple actions are required: Restaurant reservation and then go see a movie, and can offer two cards with relevant information and links to arrange your night out.

Dinner and a Movie

To activate Now on Tap, you hold the home button and you’ll be offered a variety of options depending on the situation. Listening to music? Hit Now on Tap up to get a link to the bands Wikipedia entry, or the video clip on YouTube or even a link to IMDB if it’s been used on a soundtrack.

Now On Tap is designed to do all these functions and more for you simply by knowing what’s going on at any one time on your Android device. Best of all, it seems Google has worked out that pesky Back button situation and they’re confident that once you’re finished with the cards, reservations, wiki entries and more, you can hit back and go right back to whatever you were doing before loading Now on Tap.

If you’re going to be waiting a while to get Marshmallow on your Android device, Google has put a neat little demo of Now on Tap on their Marshmallow mini-site that shows you what it’s all about.

Accessing normal Google Now is such a pain now. You have to wait a few seconds for the extra button to pop up, and if you miss it (early) you have to repeat the gesture and wait again.

“Best of all, it seems Google has worked out that pesky Back button situation and they’re confident that once you’re finished with the cards, reservations, wiki entries and more, you can hit back and go right back to whatever you were doing before loading Now on Tap.” That’s a big deal (unfortunately) if Google has fixed the back button. However I think they should have gone one better and return you to the Now On Tap options instead of taking you back to wherever you were just before the long tap. Apart from checking out the info about a movie… Read more »

I’m not a fan of the new way to access Google Now. Needing to tap and wait just seems to take so long, I loved the speed of just swiping up from the bottom.

From what I understand, you can still swipe up to get to Google Now and all the cards it serves up to you. Now On Tap is not the same thing, Think of it as an extension of Google Now which basically performs a search on whatever you are currently looking at, for example the invite to go see the new movie “The Martian”. This saves you time because you don’t have to go open Chrome (or your favourite cinema app) to then find the movie to then get the session times. This would be served up to you with… Read more »

Swiping up doesn’t do anything for me, it’s now a tap and hold with a (IMO) way too long of a delay.

Wow so swipe up access to normal Google Now is gone…

I can understand why Google went with long press for Now On Tap. It’s probably because of the iPhone where a long press activates Siri for search whereas a swipe up brings up the control center. I believe it’s the same on a Samsung Galaxy phone. Damn it.
