Google has their fingers in many, many pies. Some of their endeavours are related to their core product offerings, others are pie in the sky research, such as Project Loon, and yet others are intended to achieve their core mission to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” with endeavours such as their book indexing project or case in point the Google Cultural Institute.
In a blog post today Google “took the covers off” a redesign to both the Website and mobile app (available on Android and iOS). For those unfamiliar with the Google Cultural Institute they have catalogued a vast amount of both artistic and cultural history for easy viewing online.
With the new app you can now seamlessly use a Google Cardboard to take 3D tours of many of the world’s greatest attractions and historic places. The new site is decidedly Google in design and offers easy access to:
- Search for anything
- Scroll through art by time
- Browse by color
- Find a new fascinating story to discover every day
If visiting these sites in real life is a little more your style Google can assist you to plan you trip with helpful information including opening times, find out what’s on that day and navigate there with just one click. Or once you’r there the app has an inbuilt “Art Recogniser” that will display all the information about the artwork. Art Recognise is currently limited to London’s Dulwich Picture Gallery, Sydney’s Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.
Head on over to www.google.com/culturalinstitute to check it out. If you want to try out the updated app for yourself grab it below.
