Earlier this week, Australian Healthcare provider Feros Care announced in partnership with Google a voice based app for Google assistant to assist those with disabilities. Google have continued to target inclusivity with further announcement assisting those with visual impairments through the app Be My Eyes.
Be My Eyes is a free app available for both iOS and Android that connects people who are blind and low-vision to nearly two million sighted volunteers in the Be My Eyes community. Through a live connection, a volunteer can assist someone with a task that requires visual assistance, such as checking expiry dates, distinguishing colors, reading instructions or navigating new surroundings. This new partnership comes from a common goal between Be My Eyes and Google to help people with disabilities live more independent lives.
Obviously for regular readers, they would know I have a personal connection to this with my son being totally blind so it was absolutely a pleasure to see such a pathway opened to those who need it, backed by Google. So much so that they have engaged a disability support team who are working to implement phone support for the community and, perhaps more importantly, to work closely with Google to provide user feedback to the team.
