Google Play Books often feels like it’s the forgotten love child of the Play Store, it’s just not as prominent as other features but perhaps it just haven’t hit its stride yet.

The latest update rolling out has some new features for Audiobook users that may bring some interest and love back to the Play Books app.

This starts with a much needed playback section focussed on Audiobooks and expanding into Audio Quality (much the same way that Play Music allows you to choose your download quality) and changes to the forward and backward jump in playback.

The playback section (if you’re yet to see the update, APK Mirror is your friend) is located in settings giving you the options to:

  • Change skips back and forward to increments of 5, 15, 30 or 60 seconds
  • Set the quality of download globally for Audiobooks to either standard or high quality with the expected file size change as you improve quality

While the changes seem very simple and perhaps quite trivial, as someone who listens to audiobooks in the car a lot – the ability to change the skip times is something I’ve wanted for a while now.

It’s great to see Google continuing to work on their core products, offering increased functionality to users.
