After the successful launch of Linux for Chromebooks which caught the attention of a lot of developers, it seems there’s been a push for more.
A recent submission for additional functionality on Chromium has me very interested. The request (along with mock screenshots on how the setup may look) is for users to have the option to choose their Linux Distribution at the time of install.
I like it for a few reasons. Initially Ubuntu LTS was the only option which is fine – it’s mainstream and well supported as a desktop environment — and there are ways to install other distros but it really isn’t a user friendly setup which the new solution looks to fix.
When it comes to Linux distros, developers favour Debian Linux as a rule. Those who work on server environments a lot tend to favour Redhat and as a desktop environment Ubuntu is the primary option for many users. So expanding the functionality to broader bases makes great sense.
Clearly the team at Chromium think so too because (unlike many of the other requests that get submitted) it has been assigned to a team member to investigate further and given a priority. As a priority 3 – it won’t be delivered quickly, but it will be looked at.
It’s a fascinating potential expansion for the future which I hope is delivered and is well supported by continued development of the ChromeOS platform and associated hardware.
