Files by Google, Google’s Android file management app, is adding the ability to cast local files and media. It’s rolling out now to a subset of the app’s beta testing group.
The ability to cast local media is something lots of people have been asking for since the advent of Chromecast, with a few attempts in the past at making it work. Anything that requires a step by step guide across multiple websites is ripe for simplification, so it’s a welcome addition to the app.
Files can let to view your device’s media on the biggest screen in your home or office (with a Chromecast attached). It’s unclear what the final list of formats actually supported will be – documents, etc are unsupported but would be super handy – but photos and videos are working. Music is not.
According to 9to5Google, the feature is rolling out to a subset the Files beta group. You can join the beta on the app’s Play store listing.
