Internet access is pretty great, and wireless internet is even better. To get in the swing of things for World Wi-Fi Day tomorrow, Telstra is opening up access to their nationally available Telstra Air Wi-Fi hotspots to everyone.

Telstra is also taking the golden opportunity presented by World Wi-Fi Day to bring their one millionth Telstra Air hotspot online. It’s located in Mildura, in the north of Victoria. Telstra offers Air hotspots from public payphones, local council areas, residential areas and business centres. There are one million hotspots, but of these, only 4,000 are publicly available. You can generally find these at Telstra stores and at payphones with the pink Wi-Fi box on top.

From tomorrow, World Wi-Fi Day, you can download through them for free.

What is World Wi-Fi Day?

The World Wi-Fi Day website says:

World Wi-Fi day is a global initiative to help bridge the digital divide.

The day is a platform to celebrate the significant role Wi-Fi is playing in cities and communities around the world. It does this by driving exciting and innovative projects to ‘connect the unconnected’.

Mobile customers are starting to seek out Wi-Fi hotspots to avoid using up precious mobile data, says Telstra’s General Manager for Telstra Air, Viveca Samuelsson. As an official partner for World Wi-Fi Day, this as a good opportunity for Telstra to show off their Air network. Ms Samuelsson said

… with a million hotspots now live, our eligible mobile and broadband customers can tap into free and unlimited Wi-Fi data to stream, share and post at more of their favourite beach areas, parks, shopping precincts and holiday destinations. To celebrate the rapid growth of the network and to recognise the huge role Wi-Fi plays in our lives, we’re opening up our public hotspots for World Wi-Fi Day on Tuesday.

How do you access a Telstra Air public hotspot?

First, find a public hotspot that you can access. Open your Wi-Fi settings and connect to the “Telstra Free Wi-Fi” hotspot. Simply accept the terms and conditions in the portal window popup that appears and you’re on the network.

Tomorrow, you can get on your marks, get set, Download…well, tomorrow anyway. Head to the Telstra Air website to find a hotspot near you.
