Google Currents

When Google announced they were killing off Reader, a lot of users (myself included) started the search for a replacement app.

Now I am probably in a slightly different category to most of the guys on Ausdroid as I have been a big user of Currents in the past and only recently made the switch back to Reader, so when I started my search for a replacement app, Currents was high on my list. I tried several different apps but none of them was quite the right fit.

Pulse had all of the functionality that I needed but didn’t appeal to my taste visually, Feedly looks great but I’m really after something that has offline sync so that I can read my news while on flights, and then there was Google Currents which I was familiar with but didn’t sync my read items across devices.

Today, Google have fixed that issue and it now syncs all of your read items across all of your devices. I tested this on the way to work this morning and it worked exactly as expected.

Another feature that Google have added is the ability to play audio in the app. This will be great for listening to those podcasts that you all subscribe to on the go. This feature is quite basic and doesn’t include all of the features that a fully-fledged podcast app like Pocket Casts has.

I know there are a lot of people out there that would still prefer an RSS app as a replacement for Reader, but for me, this latest update is enough to push me back to Google Currents as my primary news reading app.

Give it a shot and let us know what you think in the comments below.
