After going semi-live in Australia last month in an exclusive deal with Telstra that saw $50 Google Play Gift cards given away to new Telstra Mobile account holders, Google Play Gift Cards look set to launch in a more accessible fashion to the rest of us very soon.
The evidence for Google Play Gift Cards launching at retail in Australia has been mounting since early July when we saw the ‘Redeem Gift Card’ option become available in both the Google Play store, as well as in Google Wallet. A job listing for a Retail Partner Manager who would ‘grow the Google Play gift card business’ in Australia appeared to cement Google’s intentions, and now we have more evidence.
The Google Play Gift Cards support page for Australia is now advising :
By comparison, the US offers Google Play Gift Cards in $10, $15, $25 and $50 denominations, the UK in £10, £25 and £50 denominations and France and Germany who offer them in 15€, 25€ and 50€ denominations.
A tip sent in to Ausdroid this morning, advises that Google Play Gift Cards will go on-sale, Monday the 26th of August, in a ‘national supermarket chain’. The tip advises that planograms have been sent to stores, advising on setups for the display of the Google Play Gift Cards. At this stage evidence points towards the Woolworths group as the national chain, and the cards could possibly be made available through Big W as well. We have approached Woolworths for official comment and are awaiting their response.
We approached Google Australia for comment and while they could not confirm dates at this stage, they advised :
Google Play gift cards will soon be available in Australia. We’ll have more information to share when they hit shelves.
Requests from readers for information on a retail launch of Google Play gift cards have been second only to requests for information on the launch of the Nexus 7 (2013) and Chromecast in Australia. We love to see and hear anything you have so make sure if you see any Google Play Gift Cards on the shelves you take a picture and tip us or send us one ;).

I know so many people that will never give Google a credit card for a one dollar app. Another step to convenience level of apple
That’s what i thought but it’s not that simple. In order to redeem card value we need a Wallet account after the gift card code, and that requires a credit card, it doesn’t make sense to me.

Finally we’re getting the cards.
Google should have had these up and running globally well over 2 years ago.
Does make me wonder who was employed to fill that job vacancy though.
