It seems wearable devices are becoming all the rage, with a few different makes of smart watches now available within the market place. With Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, Sony’s Smart Watch 2 and the Pebble smart watch, competition is certainly beginning to ramp up.

It seems now Big W wants to get in on the smart watch craze, with the Burg Smart Watch 16 device which acts like the Samsung Galaxy Gear. The Burg watch can make and take calls along with creating and sending SMSs. Unlike other smartwatches though, the Burg 16 doesn’t require tethering to your existing mobile phone or mobile device. Rather, the Burg 16ย is a mobile phone in its own right!

Yes, that’s right. You put a SIM card in it, and that’s the only device you need carry; it truly is a phone on your wrist. It would make Dick Tracey proud.

The Burg 16 Smartwatch specs include:

  • 1.54″ touchscreen (240×240 Pixels)
  • Standard SIM card slot
  • FM radio
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • Micro SD compatible
  • Tracking system
  • Ability to send/receive SMS & calls
  • Headset

The device is listed as having ‘multimedia capabilities’, though this inclusion isn’t expanded upon, making it unclear exactly what multimedia capabilities the watch has. With such a small screen, it’s reasonable to conclude that playback of music might be the extent of these capabilities, but equally, there’s probably no reason (beyond the minuscule screen) that the Burg 16 couldn’t play back movies or photos as well.

The Burg Smart Watch 16 is aimed at women who are looking for a stylish device. It does seem however the only colours available are black and white.

If you’re in the market for a smart watch but don’t want to pay the hefty prices for other smart watches (such as the Galaxy Gear), then the Berg Smartwatch 16 might just be for you.

Would you consider purchasing the Berg Smartwatch 16? Are you in the market for a smart watch device? Tell us in the comments below

The integrated battery in my Burg 16 has begun to swell due to its age. Even though it holds charge the swelling means it distorts the case and as a result the sim card gets moved away from the contacts. This gives the sos only message. I’ve decided to give the newly available OK Watch (Viper), available from Coles for $79.00 a go instead. It appears to be a more advanced version of the same OS as provided in the BURG, but with added functions, a better case, seperate battery, and a camera. As such it will be a simple… Read more ยป

I’ve just confirmed that the OK Watch is only GSM (2G), this is the same as the BURG. Telstra will close this on Dec 1st 2016. I’ll go back to my BURG as a Bluetooth sync with my existing phone, till its battery completely dies. The $400.00 one mentioned is now $299.00 . It is fully android, but I’ve yet to confirm it is 3G.

I was wondering about the Burg 16. I want to use it when I run. Does it have GPS/Google maps functions? Can I download other apps onto the phone/watch? Can I access Safari to search the net? Thanks

Really, really don’t buy this watch, there are so many better options, this is NOT a good smartwatch. There is no built-in functions like GPS and it has no app eco-system.

If you’re on Apple, grab the cheapest Apple Watch (basing this off your use of Safari), if you’re on Android, grab a Sony Smartwatch 3 with built-in GPS.

Thanks for your advice. Looking at the Sony Store in the US, looks like the Smartwatch 3 is being discontinued. I hope they come up with something even better soon.

for the sim card, do you have to get a whole new sim and a whole new plan and pay extra?

Father christmas brought my son a burg 16 we have put the sim in and it continues to say no sim sos. How do I get this to work.

    barb dunn

My boy got the same thing he had to slide the micro sd card in the metal bit underneath and closed like a book and then he slid the sim card into the metal holder and closed but he also had to slide the metal bit over to lock it in if that makes sense. His no longer says sos and now works and I hope this is helpful and not confusing. .lol ..good luck โ˜บ

dont bother with a burg watch phone,i have two and both have the same problem ,shit intergrated Batteries from china that will last 4 or 5 mounths before they stop charging,if you think you can get someone to repair it you’r wrong, and don’t bother contacting BURG because they won’t respond.if you have been silly enough to by one just put it in the bin.

I just bought one from big w and the sim from a Telstra outlet….it’s perfect for when I’m walking the dogs or busy at work and my children need to contact me. I love it.

Hi, Sorry to hear there are a few folk having trouble with the phone. I have a bog standard telstra prepaid sim in mine as well as an 8 gig micro SD for storage. I recently did a 6000 km trip around NSW, SA and VIC. The phone worked everywhere, even coober pedy where most other carriers don’t. The phone is GSM not 3G, so that may be part of the trouble. Check with your service / SIM provider and see what their network works with. My only issue at the moment is with the black screen surround that protects… Read more ยป

So, this watch can cater for a normal sized SIM and an SD card. But a 5″ phone couldn’t possibly, there just isn’t enough room…

The Burg 16 is NOT an Android device. It’s a wristwatch feature phone.

I bought a burg smart watch 16 from bigw my sim wouldn’t go in or fit please help

I don’t have one but I would think that the instructions should help? I found an ended Ebay stating that it is a micro SIM.

The BURG 16 has two card frames inside it, the small one is for the micro SD the larger one is for your SIM. They are accessable with the battery removed and fold ove each other to save space. They have to be shut in a particular order that is detailed in the downloadable pdf users manual from the BURG site. This is more detailed than the quickstart guide that comes with the phone. Once shut the battery helps to hold them in place. I hope that replacement batteries are available as the phone is quite usefull. The bonus of… Read more ยป

I presume it’s some proprietary OS, or is it Android? (I’m imagining Android 1.6 Donut ๐Ÿ˜‰
