Samsung has now formally announced an(other) addition to its already fairly crowded tablet range with the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite. In a range where there’s already a Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, the addition of another 7″ tablet seems just a little unusual.

This, especially when you consider the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 was hardly remarkable — it featured a dual-core 1.2 GHz CPU, 8 or 16 GB internal storage, uninspiring cameras even for a tablet — but it was saved by a fairly large battery capacity of 4,000 mAh.

The newly announced Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is somewhat less remarkable than this. The same 1.2 GHz CPU is back, this time with a lower resolution screen (1024×600), just 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, and a 3,600 mAh battery, no front facing camera, and just a 2 MP camera on the rear.

While the Tab 3 Lite will be available in 3G and Wi-Fi variants, in black and white, they will launch with Android 4.2 (rather outdated now). There’s no announcement on pricing or availability, or even a launch date, but one wonders why Samsung has decided to go down this path. The low-end tablet market is seriously crowded with mediocre devices, and this is smack-bang in the middle of mediocre.

Don’t understand why the one camera isn’t on the front. Means no video calls. 😛

So silly.

It’s actually quite easy to figure what Samsung’s plans are.
Samsung are perceived as a pricey Name Brand, so they aren’t making as good an inroads at the budget entry end of the market as they want.

This new tablet seems, to me, to be an attempt to turn the budget entry end of the market away from no-name yum-cha, toward Samsung.

yep, there are very few (none?) current name-brand budget devices, and I often see customers shirk at even the couple of hundred dollars for a retail Nexus 7 or Tab 3 7″. I can see this selling very well, however given how price-sensitive this segment is I wonder how much money Samsung will be making from it. Perhaps they are heading more towards brand penetration? A lot of the budget tablets are purchased for children, so kiddies seeing Samsung every day would certainly be of value to the company.

I think I agree Jeni. I don’t see the tablet selling very well.. honestly the Tab 3 7.0 itself was really bad… a Lite version of the same is going to be really.. well.. lite.

But that said, there are some for whom, if this is priced right, the Tab 3 Lite could be quite appealing.
