Sony is one of the largest OEMs pro-actively promoting AOSP development for their phones and tablets, and today they’ve added two more devices to the list, adding the Xperia Z1 and Z2, and Xperia M2 to their AOSP for Xperia project on SonyXperiaDev GitHub.
As well as adding support for the two new phones, Sony has also announced a new unified kernel for devices using the Qualcomm MSM8974 processor. Adding a unified kernel will make for more easier and faster mods for community developers. The unified kernel will be easier for ROM developers to work with as all kernel source will be stored in one branch instead of several, across different software versions.
As a bonus, Sony has also advised they have updated the Xperia Z to the latest Android version.
It’s important to note that all the software at the source is NOT intended for daily use. Sony advises that the camera isn’t working and most importantly for phones, the modem isn’t working.
Sony is encouraging developers to fork their kernel and obviously push back any improvements they make. It’s definitely a give and take but one that benefits everyone in the long run. All the source is available now on the Sony XperiaDev Github page, check it out.
