MWC15-rgb-black

Ausdroid is entering its fifth year in 2015, and we’d like to make it our biggest yet. From humble beginnings, we’ve grown to a reasonably sustainable model, but there’s some things we haven’t yet been able to achieve. Tech media in Australia is a small industry, and many sites (including ours) operate on a shoestring budget.

Because of this, we’ve covered the major international events from here, home in Australia. Ausdroid doesn’t have the capacity to send our guys around the world for things like this, but at the same time, we want to provide that live, first-person coverage to see what a difference it makes to how we cover an event like this. More importantly, we want to give you guys the best coverage we can muster.

What we’re asking

We’ve done a few sums, and we reckon we could fly Dan to Barcelona for around the $2,000 mark. If we ask him to stay there for five or six days, we’re probably looking at around another $1,000 or so for accommodation. He’ll need to drink and eat as well. Here’s roughly what we’re looking at:

Flights – Sydney to Barcelona ~ $2,000
Accommodation $1,000 to $1,200 or so
Incidentals – meals, drinks, etc $100 per day
Total ~ $3,500

If just 100 readers donated $30 each, that’s $3,000 raised. Would they get value for their $30? For sure! We’d have first person, live (and a lot more detailed) coverage than you’ll see from other outlets. You’d have one of the most enthusiastic Android experts from Australia covering the likely launch of Sony’s Xperia Z4, Samsung’s Galaxy S6, HTC’s One M9, and much more.

Let’s break that down a little, just so it’s a bit more visual:

  • 100 donors of $30 each? Target reached.
  • 200 donors of $15? We’re there.
  • 300 donors of just $8? Dan packs his bags.
  • A couple of angel donors throw in a couple of hundred bucks? Far fewer people are needed.

You get the idea. Of course, every contribution towards the goal is going to help.

This is achievable, and we think that with your help, we can make it happen. CES wasn’t worth much coverage for Ausdroid… but MWC? It’s almost guaranteed. Just once we’d like to cover it in person, and see what a difference first hand coverage makes, instead of regurgitating other people’s news.

Of course, Ausdroid may be in a position to cover part of the cost ourselves, so we may not necessarily need sponsorship for the full cost. We’ll chip in what we can.

Would you help us?

So, what do you guys think? Can we get Dan to Barcelona for a few days? It’ll be no holiday for him — he’ll be working his arse off, and so will we back here in Ausdroid HQ — but this is something we want to do for you (the same reason we write everything else on here, because you guys keep reading it).

We’ve put in a little poll so you can give us an idea of your thoughts, and what you might contribute if asked. Please answer seriously — we’re trying to gauge interest here, and bogus answers won’t help.

If you can’t help, we’d rather know than have no idea. We don’t expect you to chip in. This isn’t an exercise in causing any guilt. It’s just an idea we’ve had and we’d like to know what you think.

Depending on the feedback, we may set up an IndieGoGo campaign to get everything happening. If you’re able to help in another way, get in touch and let us know.

We are, of course, on the lookout for potential sponsors as well. If you’re reading this and thinking you’d like Ausdroid to get to MWC, then get in touch with Chris. If you’d like to use some of our coverage for YOUR publication, let us know, and we can come to an arrangement.

I’d pitch in to see reporting from an Aussie at MWC.

    kjmci

I’d happily throw in $30 (not an option on the poll, I chose $20) as that’s a brief night out in London.

However, as somebody who also works in Mobile in Europe you might be scrambling for accommodation this late in the game.

Shoot me the link when it’s live and of I can convince my boss to send me to Barthelona, Dan’s first cerveza is on me!

    Daniel Tyson

    I like this!!

    Duncan_J

so are we doing this. I’m in for helping out. Is there another way except Indegogo won;t the steal 5% of your money?

    JeniSkunk

If you’re right about IndieGoGo chomping on cash raised, then we’d need to raise an extra $200 above the amounts that Chris had calculated to ensure that there would be enough once IndieGoGo takes their cut.

To safely cover the base $3000, we’d about $3200
To do the complete $3500, we’d need $3700

    Chris

All the crowdfunding platforms tend to charge fees of some sort. IGG’s are fairly low. Anyhow, we can cover the fees, so I’m not worried about that.

Give us a day or two to sound out a couple of potential sponsors and we’ll kick it off.

    JeniSkunk

Right now, it’s about 6 weeks to the start of MWC.
I think we’d have at best a week to rope in donors, giving another three or four days to collect the donations.
So is this going ahead for Dan to attend MWC, or do we give ourselves a bit more time, and look at one of the events later in the year?

    ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Looking at the poll results, I definitely think the team can pull this one off. Try your luck guys!

    Shano

I think you should be asking for enough money to send two people. Then you can send Jeni to do the female perspective. Bit of a His & Hers thing, great for readership too

    JeniSkunk

No where near enough time for me to get a passport and visa organised, Shano.
Thanks very much for the vote of confidence though.

    kjmci

We can hear all about how none of the announcements are suitable for REAL, TRUE Android users, and that everybody needs to supply Root from the factory with zero customisation.

    I’m Big Kev-excited!

    oz

Hey, 10 or 20 bucks is not going to kill anyone to get great reporting from an Australian perspective. Good luck guys.

    John Gabriel

I’ll be in for this, and if you’re coming back with bags of the usual show freebies you’ll have stuff to giveaway/raffle as per dont_feed_the_trolls comment.

You guys are a business right?

You run ads and have revenue from them, right? Then why should I donate to your business?

Also as a general public, without a reporter’s badge, you won’t get anything useful from the companies there. Have you never been to one of these things before?

    Amateur hour…

    Chris

Our advertising covers our day to day costs. It doesn’t bring in as much as you’d think. Ausdroid is a business, but it’s not a huge one, and the income we generate isn’t sufficient to cover large costs like this. Further, we’ll get plenty from being at MWC. We’re accredited as press to both GSMA and the Consumer Electronics Association, and so if we attended CES or MWC, we’d get the same access as any other journo. Besides THAT, we’ve also had invites from a number of the large manufacturers to meet with their reps behind the scenes IF we’re… Read more »

I think you guys need this kind of thing. You need to be able to step up to the next level of professionalism and get to a few shows.

I know its tough to do this when you live in the wrong corner of the planet.

If this works out, gotta try and get to I/O. Or Taiwan Computer.

    JeniSkunk

All of us regular readers and commenters should be putting in the effort to get Ausdroid to both.

    aryonoco

If you can go to MWC, obviously you’ll be publishing lots of articles around that, bringing in new readers, more hits, and more ad revenue. If you don’t think you can make $3,500 extra revenue based on that, then obviously the trip isn’t worth it. If you think you can, then the trip is an up front investment that should pay for itself. There are dozens of banks and credit unions out there who will easily give out business loans in that range. Heck you don’t even need a loan for this, a credit card would do. I’m not against… Read more »

I’m in for 20. Love to see ausdroid attend MWC

    CaptainMalarkey

You can count me in for a few bucks, perhaps $20 – $30 if I could.

    Qball

How about considering raising some funds from an annual subscription fee to Ausdroid that provides a premium ad-free user experience?

    TheBagging Man

Agreed! $30 for adfree version of the app!
I’d pay $30 either way, this the site I visit 1st daily! but may get more people onboard!

    Jamie Saltmarsh

Yep, I’m with Adam, count me in.

    Adam

Ausdroid is free and has provided me with useful information (Eg: How to order a Chromecast months before the Australian release). I am more than happy to provide $30 to support this idea.

    toast

    Sure. I like you guys.

Unm, but you keep pushing that $30 number, but that’s not a choice?

    Daniel Tyson

If it goes to IndieGoGo it’d start at like $1, this is just gauging interest.

    JeniSkunk

That is just the easiest amount to ask for, without the asked for amount being to high, or the number of backers being too large and unwieldy.

If, like me, you want to put more in, then it’s damn well BRILLIANT value for money.

    Frankie Chan

I’ll do what I can (in for $20 now) . I could see this leading to greater things for Ausdroid and for Aus Tech reporting in general. Way better than the advertorials we get now.

    dont_feed_the_troll

If an indiegogo got going maybe make it a raffle of sorts; $20 gets you 2 tickects, $50 gets you 6 etc and put up an old review device and some play vouchers or something? Just throwing out ideas 🙂 (BTW I’m in for $30-$40)

Yeah I reckon that would get some interest – easy enough to send Dan off to Barca!

    JeniSkunk

To all the folks who regularly read and comment on Ausdroid, we REALLY need to put the effort in so Ausdroid can attend MWC.

    TheBagging Man

For once I agree with you Jeni! 🙂

    Lurch

    Best of luck guys!

    deanomalino

This would be cool. Hopefully others can contribute. 🙂
