Sony is in the midst of rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to their handsets. Of course being the latest, Sony is rolling it out to their Z3 series first off, they’ve announced details of the rollout previously but they’ve now announced some new updates via Twitter on the rollout.
There’s two tweets in particular that are of interest, the first talks about the global rollout to the Xperia Z3 and Z2 series devices, while the second talks about an update to the Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia C3 phones.

Of course if you purchased your phone through an Australian mobile provider then you’ll need to wait for the software testing to be completed:
- Vodafones latest Software Update blog lists the udpate for the Xperia Z2 and Z3 as ‘Testing in progress’ – they also list the update for the Xperia Z as expected to arrive for testing in late April.
- Telstra has previously advised on their update page about the Xperia Z2/Z3 update as being scheduled to rollout on the 13th of April.
- On their Software Update page, Optus lists the Lollipop update for the Xperia Z2/Z3/Z3 Compact as ‘Next Version – 5.0 (Lollipop) Update 30/03/15 – Currently testing, expected to be released mid April.’
The outright handsets purchased from retailers without carrier software – i.e if your phone doesn’t have a carrier boot animation or pre-loaded apps – will receive the update OTA or through the Sony PC Client from Sony.
Sony has also put together a video of what the update will look like on your Z3 when it arrives:
Boom!! Update appeared! I’m now on lollipop on all my devices!
I flashed the Baltic D5803 firmware on my D5833 and everything seems to work… Got tired of waiting.
It’s not as big of a “woah” as it was on the Nexus 4. Still very nice, though.
Bought my Xperia Z3 from Sony Centre in Melbourne. Just checked still no update!!. I have Vodafone sim inside although phone is generic brand. Would that matter?
I bought my Z3 from JB HI FI outright over Christmas and asked the salesman specifically if there was any carrier related software on the phone that would hold off getting updates straight from Sony. He assured me there wasn’t.
Took it home and turned it on to be greeted with a Telstra boot animation. -_-
Couldn’t be bothered taking it back. Guess I won’t have to wait that long.
Same here. I’ve been keeping an eye out for a Generic Australian D6653 firmware on XDA (Anyone here got it?). As soon as someone posts one, I’m gonna flash my Z3 with it and its adios Telstra bloatware.
Just flash another version such as Boltic or Nordic. It’s the same, and you’ll likely get updates faster in the future. 🙂
Don’t think you can with the z3’s there is a different model so firmswares aren’t exactly compatible if using flashtool. I may be wrong I’m just going off what a friend of mine was saying about his
I was assuming it was the same as the Z2, but you’re probably right.
Yeah thats what I read on XDA too. While the Nordic firmware might flash fine on the Aussie Z3 models, one might start experiencing call drops / connection issues cos of the differing freq bands
There are different sub-models for the Z3 Compacts (D5803 and D5833), so I would assume there’ll also be different sub-models for the Z3.
hmm but dont the non-D6653 firmwares (eg: Nordic ones) use different radio / LTE bands?
I’m not sure, but I haven’t noticed any difference. I’m still getting 4G on my Z2.
I’m running Lollipop on my Z2 (Boltic version). It looks prettier in some parts, but it feels watered down compared to KitKat. The interface is looking more stock than it used to. Some people might prefer that, but I’m enjoying HTC and LG’s skins more at the moment.
I read that this morning and now I wish I had my tablet with me. I’ll check tonight to see if I’m lucky.
