Google has posted the schedule for its annual developers conference Google I/O, and it looks like they’ve snuck a reference to the next version of Android — Android M — into the agenda. There’s plenty of other things in there too, of course, but the mention of Android M is sure to set chins wagging.
As you can see in the screenshot of the schedule above, there’s a mention of Android M in one of the sandbox sessions called ‘Android for Work Update‘, which says that Android M will bring the power of Android to all kinds of workplaces. If we follow the same pattern as last year, we could see a developer preview edition announced at I/O 2015, followed by a wider consumer release later in the year.
There’s every likelihood this was inadvertent, or a case of Google having a play with us, because now, that session information has been removed. Here’s hoping it was a deliberate slip of the tongue and Android M will firmly be on the agenda. There’s been very little information about the next version of Android thus far, as the roll-out of Lollipop has been so much slower than we’d all hoped.
Let’s see what happens in a couple of weeks.
Android Mint. I like the sound of that.
As much as I love an updated OS, How about we just get lollipop working well rather than jumping to the next version when issues from the last one are still there and a pain.
M will most likely be a minor update, not a MAJOR update like 4.x -> 5.x was. M will be a 5.2 or 5.5 update.
Google has said it will always do one major release a year. Last year lollipop was pre-released even when KitKat hadn’t had a major install base yet!! So M will be no different
Also IIRC, last year KK was still being bugfixed when LL was in pre-release at I/O
I do agree with the sentiment p expressed, that the current OS should have its major bugs fixed, before the pre-release announcements for the next OS start.
Yeah Lollipop was meant to fix all the kitkat bugs, so hopefully M will fix all the Lollipop bugs 😉
But I don’t really know why google does a preview, when the memory bugs reported over and over and over again still made it to the release without being fixed!!
