Optus have had data-free services for a while now firstly offering cricket and EPL followed by data-free streaming of selected music streaming services for pre-paid customers and then more recently they announced data-free music and some TV for all customers. Today they have extended the mobile TV included in the Mobile TV streaming offering.

Joining Netflix and Presto as part of the offer are services including Stan, ABC iview and the dedicated kids app, ABC KIDS iview. Tim Cowan, Head of Mobile Marketing at Optus said:

Optus is leading the market with access to some of the best streaming services from Australia and the world. Optus is removing the biggest barrier for customers who want to stream on their mobiles with data-free streaming.

For new and existing Optus customers on selected consumer and SMB My Plan Plus and My Mobile Broadband Plus plans, the offer to stream all this TV without using their plan’s data allowance will cost them an extra $10 a month. The data-free streaming in included at no extra cost on other selected mobile and mobile broadband plans.

It is important to note though that these offers do NOT include free access to the paid services themselves (Stan, Netflix, Presto), you will need to have a subscription with them to access them.

It is good to see Optus expanding this offering as more and more people are consuming media while mobile. Hopefully we will see other service providers start to offer similar packages soon.

Do you so much TV watching while mobile? Would you do more if it was data-free?

If Optus includes either Fetch TV or YouTube streaming for free, I’ll change team. C’mon Optus! Do it!

Virgin had free YouTube a long long time ago (since stopped).
